More People Are Trading in CR-Vs, RAV4s, to Buy a Ford Maverick Truck. Are Trucks Just Cooler? More people are now trading Hondas and Toyotas than buying a new Maverick pickup. Whereas the term “selling conquest” is not a term that most of us aim for. But for the dealer or manufacturer, these words are golden. “Conquest” is when someone trades in a competing vehicle for a new car, rather than the same model. Usually, people replace Honda for Honda or Ford for another Ford.

Is it just cooler than an SUV? Now, more people are trading their SUVs, SUVs, or popular compact cars for Ford’s new Maverick pickup truck.

The open rate is more than 60 percent. This means that 60% of the vehicles traded in new Mavericks were not Ford models. The three most-traded vehicles in the new 2023 Maverick were the Honda Civic, the Honda CR-V SUV and Toyota’s RAV4, the best-selling SUV on the market today. This is unusual because most small car buyers often don’t trade in a pickup truck. Many of us would expect someone to trade in another pickup truck, like, instead.

How does a defector compare to a CR-V or RAV4?

The three seat Maverick, CR-V and RAV4 are five and have fuel-efficient engines. Despite this, the Maverick, with its 54.4-inch open bed, can carry infinitely more stuff than any of the SUV’s. The 2023 CR-V can carry 76.5 cubic feet of stuff, and the RAV4 69.8, but that’s only if you lock all the seats, and limit them to two-passenger vehicles. All three come as front-wheel drive vehicles, but all-wheel drive is optional.

The Maverick achieves significant fuel savings, especially with the base hybrid engine. Sure, the RAV4 Hybrid gets 40 mpg combined, but it starts at $30,225. The base RAV4 gets just 30 mpg, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The all-new CR-V for 2023 has a new three-cylinder engine, and can also achieve 40 mpg. But it starts at $32,000. A new Maverick base can be purchased. But this base truck comes with a hybrid engine, making it the cheapest hybrid you can buy today, and it gets an impressive 37 mpg rating from the Environmental Protection Agency. That’s about three times what some full-size trucks get.

Why is the Maverick a hot selling truck?

The defector appears to be violating normal sales trends. The best-selling Ford Maverick truck filled a lot of dealerships in just 6 days last month with sales up 123%. That’s not much different from the outgoing 2022, so there appears to be pent-up demand for a pickup truck like the Maverick.

Although Ford opened its 2023 online order banks for Maverick, it quickly received all the orders it could process, and closed them. Then, in August, it announced some new packages for Maverick, including the Tremor off-road version, and reopened the order. Dealers will soon have 2023 Mavericks, and soon sell the remaining 2022 Mavericks.

The new jolt brings some off-road cred to the defector

Speaking of the new shake-up, it is expected to boost Maverick sales even more. It comes with a 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine that puts out 250 horsepower, instead of the base 2.5-liter hybrid engine that puts out 162 horsepower. The Tremor package also adds all-wheel drive, 1-inch lift, and a unique trail-handling suspension system.
