When that happens, it can also kill the pump causing fuel starvation. This is because there is a metal-to-metal contact inside the pump, which causes metal fragments to travel in the fuel system. Many Bosch CP4 and CP4.2 fuel pumps have been replaced by Bosch CP3 pumps.
Despite producing lower fuel pressure, the CP3 pumps seem to reduce the problems with the CP4 pumps. Some suggest that using different diesel fuel treatments after each or every other filling will reduce the chances of failure.
